Blizzard has experimented with MMO elements in Diablo 4, such as large-scale multiplayer events. Called Region events, these activities are meant to be completed by ten or more players and spawn at a handful of predetermined locations.

One such event type, Legion Gathering Events, centers around players beating back waves of demons to provoke powerful bosses into showing themselves in the Overworld. Keep reading for a complete guide to Legion Gathering events, including where to find them, how to complete them, and available rewards.

Updated by Abigail Angell on Sugust 11, 2023: Players have been wondering whether Legion Gathering Events are a viable way to farm Season of the Malignant loot such as Malignant Hearts and Invokers. After testing, this guide has been updated to include that information.

What Are Legion Gathering Events?

Legion Gathering Events are a special kind of event in Diablo 4 known as a Region event. These events are intended to be completed by a group of players and are typically too hard to complete alone.

During a Legion Gathering Event, players fight waves of demons culminating in an Overlord. This event is timed and, depending on the number of players, can be very difficult to complete at the mastery level.

Finding Legion Gathering Events

Legion Gathering Event locations marked on a map of Sanctuary

When a Legion event is preparing to spawn, a circular icon will appear on the map. You will have approximately 5 minutes to arrive at the location of the event from the time the icon pops up to the time the event starts. You can join this event late, but only for a few seconds after it begins.

There are several Legion Gathering Events locations, which are chosen randomly each time the event happens. Some locations are over a Stronghold, meaning you'll need to have completed the Stronghold to participate. Known places that a Legion event can spawn are:

  • Kor Dragan - Fractured Peaks
  • Carrowcrest Ruins - Scosglen
  • Haunted Wreckage - Dry Steppes
  • Dilapidated Aqueducts - Kehjistan
  • Norgoi Vigil - Hawezar
  • Crusader's Monument - Hawezar

The game's development team has expressed the desire to add more Zone events, so more locations may be added in the future.

How Often Do Gathering Legion Events Spawn?

These events are much more common than World Bosses, who spawn every six hours. Instead, players can expect to see a new Gathering Legion Event pop up every 30 minutes. Players that want notifications about World Events such as the Gathering Legions can follow Diablo Paragon on Twitter.

How To Use Campfires In Gathering Legion Events

Desperate Times Diablo 4 Feature Image

You may notice that when you arrive at the spawn of a Gathering Legion event before it begins, there is a small campfire in the middle of the area. These campfires can be stoked (by interacting with them) to boost your experience gained during the event. This is presumably a reward for early arrivals to offset the fact that players can join a Gathering Legion Event late.

The possible experience boost from a campfire ranges from 1-15%. The buff you earn depends on how long you are standing next to the campfire before the event begins. The longer you are next to the campfire, the higher the buff, and whatever number you land on when the event begins will stick with you for the duration.

While this XP bonus did not stack with Elixirs at launch, recent patches have changed this. As a result, it is possible to reach a total of +20% XP by consuming an Elixir and standing next to the campfire.

How To Complete A Legion Gathering Event

Players fighting an overlord to complete the Legion Gathering Event in Diablo 4

Legion Gathering Events, like World Bosses, are meant to be cooperative MMO-esque events. While it is possible to complete a Legion Gathering Event solo, it is not recommended.

To complete the event, players will need to:

  1. Successfully kill all the demons in at least the first wave before the timer runs out.
  2. Fight the mini-boss that spawns (called a Harbinger).
  3. Complete the following two waves and their mini-bosses within the time limit to receive a mastery bonus (optional).
  4. Defeat the Overlord that spawns when the timer runs out.

The remaining time can be viewed under your mini-map on the right-hand side of your screen.

Gear & Consumables

Because the timers can get pretty tight for this event, it is suggested to arrive with a few key pieces of equipment.

  • Boots that increase movement speed or charges of evade (if available)
  • An active Elixir - Demon Slaying is always a good choice
  • An active incense to buff yourself during a crowded event (the right one for you is build-dependent).

Timers For Each Wave

Each wave is timed separately, with a new timer spawning at the beginning of each phase. The timers for each section of the event are:

First Wave

2 minutes

First Servant of Hell

2 minutes

Second Wave

1 minute 45 seconds

Second Servant of Hell

1 minute

Third Wave

1 minute 30 seconds

Third Servant of Hell

45 seconds

The Overlord

2 minutes

The Overlord is a reused Boss from somewhere else in the game. These are typically bosses from Side Dungeons rather than main story content. Unlike their solo-play counterparts, Overlords have greatly increased health and damage. Known Overlords include:

When fighting the Overlord, familiarity with the game's optional content is your best friend, as all Overlords share the mechanics of their weaker counterparts.

Rewards For Legion Gathering Events

A Legion Gathering Event Completion with Radiant chests from Diablo 4

Players who complete Legion Gathering Events will receive several rewards. Like local events, there are two tiers of completion - standard and mastery. For standard completion, you will receive 3 Radiant Chests, while for mastery completion, you will receive 3 Greater Radiant Chests. This loot is instanced, meaning each player gets their own.

Radiant chests drop gold, gear, Murmuring Obols, crafting materials, and gems when opened. While Legendary items are not guaranteed from Radiant Chests, there is a significantly higher chance than when opening a regular chest.

Additionally, the Greater Radiant Chests that spawn from Gathering Legion Events have a small chance to contain Legion-specific cosmetics and gear.

At this time, Seasonal Loot will not drop from Legion Gathering Events. This is because the spawning rules for the event override special enemy spawning and chest drops.

Cosmetic Drops From Gathering Legion Events

Data on which items drop from Legion Events is still incomplete. However, there are several confirmed drops:

  • The Spectral Charger Mount
  • The Brigand's Mount
  • The Caldeum Mount
  • The Cavalier's Mount
  • The Executioner's Mount
  • The Seal Brown Mount
  • The Trapper's Mount

These mounts appear to drop as a random chance on a loot table, so your success in collecting them may vary.
