Sword Man received his full debut in the series in Chapter 138 of Chainsaw Man, after a previous cameo appearance in Chapter 86. It wasn't clear at first if he was a friend or a foe, but Denji definitely needed someone by his side after all his recent hardships. Until now, Miri Sugo appeared to support Denji, and he reveals he (Denji) was the one to save him from Makima, prompting Sugo to want to befriend Denji as a result. Trusting Miri Sugo, Denji accepts his offer to join the Church; however, only time will tell if Miri Sugo, also known as Sword Man, is really a friend or yet another person with sinister motives for Denji.

Chainsaw Man chapter 140 release date and time

Sword Man revealed to Denji that he used to be the sword hybrid under Makima's control. Denji, still a bit puzzled, clarified that he wasn't the same Chainsaw Man he battled before heading off to school. During class, Sword Man introduced himself as a transferred student from Kanagawa, Miri Sugo. Miri revealed his athletic skills and proficiency at playing the piano, impressing the girls in class. As he took his seat, a group of girls surrounded him, creating a nuisance. He turned to Denji and asked for help in getting them to leave, leaving Denji baffled.

Later, Denji attempted to question Miri while Fumiko was perched on his back. Miri disclosed that the weapon hybrids were aligned with the Church, offering him a significant position if he joined. Fumiko found it illogical for Denji not to lead the Church, but Miri countered that his role offered autonomy in missions and rewards; he even mentioned enjoying steak every day. Fumiko declined, suggesting Denji would tire of steak, and she fancied sushi and parfaits instead. Denji suggested Chinese food, but Miri redirected their conversation.

Miri acknowledged Denji's history with Makima, revealing he too had been trapped until Denji's help liberated him. Grateful, he joined the Church, dedicating himself to a cause he valued. Fumiko questioned if the Church exploited him, but he rejected it. Denji, despite challenges, enjoyed life as he dreamed and declined Miri's plea. Frustrated, Miri left, regretting not befriending Denji, who he noted freed him. Exiting before Denji, they unexpectedly crossed paths again, and Denji changed his stance after reconsidering.
