It is so vast and beyond comprehension that it's perfect grounds for cooking up all manner of terrors. Nintendo has played with this Lovecraftian concept, most prominently with Giygas from Earthbound. But the series that has most consistently toyed with capturing the unsettling aspect of space is Metroid. Taking on the role of Samus Aran, my battles with the Space Pirates have been treacherous, but nothing could have prepared me for the utter horror unleashed by the SA-X in Metroid Fusion, where a creepy doppelganger-like creature stalks us along our mission.

It's very cute, and a perfect introduction to his quippy and sarcastic attitude. There are more than a few references to the "Everwar" that the plot will soon revolve around, but for the moment, it's just Jak and his family.

<![CDATA[Stray Gods: Apollo And Medusa's Transformations Stole My Heart]]> I've been spending a lot of time lately on Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical, and one of the things I've come to appreciate most about it is the breadth of choice that the game gives me to pass judgment on my fellow Idols, even though I'm supposed to be the one on trial. It's actually a pretty basic formula, with most choices broken down to green, blue, or red, corresponding to empathy, logic, or aggression, respectively. And while you're not tied down to just one of the three, I find myself going green way more often than not.

Because some people have no patience for a 10+ hour Lord of the Rings marathon. At least it’s not one of those boring documentaries, right? Well, it all depends on your interests. Non-fiction can be just as engaging as fiction. Personally, I love books about music and music about books, but I especially dig movies about games.

While I missed out on the whole Chrono Trigger, Pokemon, and Final Fantasy craze that most Western kids were swept up in, I've come to appreciate my unique gaming upbringing as I grew up, surrounded by some lesser-known gems like Silent Bomber, Bloody Roar, and the first game my mother bought for me along with the PSX console, Digimon World 3.

Yet, at least in the West, the original first half of the story (the anime used Z has a rebrand for the darker half, while the manga refers to the whole story as Dragon Ball) gets lost in the shuffle. Original Dragon Ball was more comedy martial arts, with far fewer ki blasts and evil aliens. For fans like myself, it's the better half of Goku's story.

<![CDATA[I Finally Came Back To Black Ops, But I'm Too Old To Be Good]]> Almost 13 years ago, I walked into a GAME store—a UK video game retailer—and picked up my launch-day copy of Call of Duty Black Ops. Back then, I was 20 years old, somewhat happy, childless, and, crucially, jobless. That might not sound like a good mix, but being without gainful employment allowed me to spend a good portion of 2010/2011 wasting my life on Call of Duty Black Ops' online multiplayer, which, in turn, led to this bit of literature that you're consuming for absolutely no cost. My previous poverty is your flash-in-the-pan entertainment. You're welcome, yer blighter. The significance of the original Black Ops is that it's the one and only Call of Duty game I've ever played online for any measurable amount of time. I was all about the single-player stories, and I was probably one of the few who ran out every year to see what Captain Price, Soap, and the rest of the merry gang of government-funded murderers were getting up to. But with Black Ops, something changed.

Like a paleontologist discovering a new species of dinosaur, I was over the moon. The game opens up on auditions for new band members—Grace's opening narration explains that they weren't looking for anything specific; they just needed a change. But when no one with even a note of musical talent shows up, and Grace slumps in her chair clouded in ennui, it's Freddie who comes to the rescue, lightening the mood by sharing a humorous dream she had about turning up to these auditions naked, and checking in with Grace one on one to see if there's anything she can do you help.

It was a new IP from Capcom, a company that already proved its mettle with zombies in Resident Evil. I played through both in their entirety in split-screen with my partner, and can legitimately say at this point that they made the pandemic bearable. I still remember how the first game let you play rock-paper-scissors with your partner (skewed towards whoever had better ‘Persuasion’) to decide whose dialogue decision won out in a given situation, while Original Sin 2 would go so far as to let players screw each other in their bids to become the Divine.

I wouldn’t say its some kind of graphical powerhouse or a game in need of a photo mode to capture those sweeping vistas, but there’s still plenty to feast your eyes on—whether it’s the Arcane Tower in the distant mists of the Underdark, or (I’d imagine, seeing as I’m not there yet) the city of Baldur’s Gate sprawling out in front of you as you look down from the upper city.

About a year ago, I started replaying the trilogy. I got through the first game, and it still tugged at my heartstrings hearing Leona Lewis sing “My Hands” during the final cutscenes—to this day, it’s still one of my favorite Final Fantasy theme songs. And while I do enjoy playing Final Fantasy 13, it was 13-2 that I could really go back to, and it was for a reason that many people don’t seem to agree on—Serah Farron.

It currently looks like Shadowheart, Astarion and Karlach are the three most popular companions among players, but I'd like to shine a light on a companion who seems to be one of the least liked companions due largely to her rude, rough, and ready (and I'd say misunderstood) personality.

<![CDATA[Gale Is The Secret Star Of Baldur's Gate 3]]> It's a great idea to mix up the squad in Baldur's Gate 3. Some dungeons are filled almost entirely with hoards of undead enemies, making Wyll and Shadowheart vital selections. In single-boss encounters, Lae'zel and Astarion thrive, as one tanks and the other strikes from the shadows. And then there's the matter of approval to consider; getting characters to like me through my decisions is critical. If I'm getting slaves out of prison, Karlach is a must. If I'm telling a Goblin where to stick it, I swap her out for Lae'zel.

The 'F5' keys on keyboards are experiencing unprecedented wear and tear, and SSDs are straining to keep up with the sheer amount of read-writing quicksaves and quickloads people are putting them through.

<![CDATA[Being An Older Gamer Means Hoarding Systems I'll Never Play]]> I remember as a kid on the weekends, after doing my chores, I'd go to my room to play some games or play with my toys. I'd often sit in the middle of the room for the longest time trying to decide what to play with. I'm sure you know the feeling. You've so much available, you just don't know what to do with it all. I've recently realized it's a behavior I've never really grown out of, and it's actually become a bit of a problem. But, I have a diagnosis. Not from a doctor or a conveniently relevant episode of House, but from myself. I've self-diagnosed myself as an absolutely terrible hoarder. What's more, I even know why I hoard. The path to recovery starts here by laying my shame bare on the Internet for all to see!

<![CDATA[Fear and Hunger 2: Termina is JRPG Horror Perfection ]]> There you are: one of 14 passengers aboard a train. You are dropped off at the outskirts of the town of Prehevil, where you are given three days to uncover the town's secrets. Before you know it, you are forced into a battle royale event known as the Termina Festival, of which there can be only one winner, all the while a grinning moon leers down at you, delighting in the suffering and chaos. This is Fear and Hunger 2: Termina, and we are about to enter a world of your most primal fears...

<![CDATA[Let's Just Calm Down About The Nudity In Baldur's Gate 3]]> Baldur’s Gate 3 has dicks and vaginas, but you probably know that already from all the fuss that’s been made about it. As is often the case around things in games that on the surface don’t really seem like they should matter, strange arguments have been made, battle lines have been drawn. JRPG fans are crying out about the injustice and hypocrisy of western gamers (or devs, or censor boards, or whoever) that they’re fine with nudity in Baldur’s Gate 3 but not fine with it in dodgy Japanese ‘fanservice’ games, while streamers are supposedly shocked, shocked I tell you, at the adjustable jangy bits in the character creator.

<![CDATA[I can't wait for the Baiten Kaitos 1 and 2 HD Remasters]]> Monolith Soft has been one of Nintendo’s most celebrated developers recently, with the on-going success of the Xenoblade series and their hand in helping to create the recent Zelda video games’ worlds. While their newer works need no introduction there’s a lot more to the developer’s back-catalogue than the Xenosaga trilogy, such as the Baten Kaitos series, released on the Nintendo GameCube in the early 2000s. With remasters of both Baten Kaitos games set to come to the Nintendo Switch September 14, I want to dive in and dig into why I can’t wait to play these classic JRPGs.

Not only was it a breezy three minutes long, but instead of ignoring a series of titular delays on a handful of Devolver Digital titles, it leaned right into them with an honesty and facetiousness that I truly hope is replicated by future developers as a best practice in informing the public of any setbacks.

<![CDATA[I'm Glad Red Dead Redemption Is Getting A Port Instead Of A Remake]]> Red Dead Redemption set a fire in the gaming world in 2010. Games had stories before then, but RDR told something so personal and so well that it just hit different. The Last Of Us is sometimes called The Citizen Kane of games today, but Red Dead Redemption held that title first. Not long after the prequel, I remember all the fans (especially on Reddit) saying the only thing they wanted was a remake of the original game in the style of Red Dead Redemption 2.

However, unlike some, I never developed an interest in tabletop roleplaying games during my childhood. <![CDATA[Sorry, Assassin's Creed Mirage Is Too Short]]> 140 hours. That's roughly how long it took me to complete Assassin's Creed Valhalla and its three accompanying expansions. Apparently, that’s a pretty fast run as things go, given it took DualShockers' own Vlad almost 400 hours and left him never wanting to touch an open-world game again. But, in fairness, I wasn't searching for every nook and cranny hidden across England, I was simply following Eivor's journey from start to finish. And you know what? I had an absolute blast. So much so, that I'm incredibly disappointed by the news that the next Assassin's Creed game, Mirage, will only be 20-24 hours long.

And it really should, because its strange, cinematic and acrobatic combat system is among the best I've played in a JRPG.

<![CDATA[Starfield's 'Nasa Punk' Style Feels Uninspired And Cliché]]> Realism: the magic word that's become part of the vernacular of every 'how to sell a game in 2023' marketing material. And Starfield seems to be pursuing a similar goal with its visual style. Speaking to Xbox Wire in February, lead artist Istvan Pely described the aesthetics as 'NASA punk', a term that, according to the team's vision, refers to a sci-fi universe that's a little more 'grounded' and 'relatable'. And damn it, you couldn't have chosen a more effective way to kill my hype than by using those very words.

I was so bold as to declare a few days before playing it that Baldur’s Gate 3 would basically reduce Starfield to a bit-part player in my 2023 gaming plans, and some 30 hours in, I stand by that. In classic RPGs like Dragon Age: Origins and Baldur’s Gate 2, stealth would basically be rendered null and void as soon as you entered combat (and there wasn’t that much stealth-killing you could do to set yourself up for combat, what with most groups of enemies functioning in clusters rather than walking patrol routes).

<![CDATA[Can We Please Give Rayman His Own Game Again?]]> There's something oddly depressing about the recent trailer for Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope DLC 3, where Rayman's return to gaming was finally shown off. Not only is it does it annoy me that the character is finally coming back in a game not at all related to his home genre (platforming), but it's just sad given the context. The poor guy's been reduced to a cameo in his own franchise—with the rabbids originally being characters in a Rayman spin-off. Despite the limbless hero being a platforming star since his 1995 debut, he hasn't had a game (not counting a couple middling mobile titles) since the excellent Rayman Legends—which was ten years ago.

I understand where Yoshi-P—the one who started the discussion in his interview with Skill Up—is coming from. JRPG has been and still is a discriminatory term on Internet forums, and I've seen it thrown around derogatorily many times to refer to those 'quirky weird alien games that aren't Diablo or Baldur's Gate' .... and that's putting it mildly.

Don’t get me wrong, Original Sin 2 has a wonderfully reactive, deep, and creative combat system, but even that was starting to bow under the weight of sheer pacing-drain. The problem would only get amplified when playing with two or more people, when you could be waiting a good 10 minutes for your turn.

Game Pass has that exact issue, with rows on top of rows of titles to choose from. It's a great issue to have, don't get me wrong, but when trying something new, I often worry I'll bet on the wrong horse and snag a game that drags on too long in the beginning. This happened to me recently with Minecraft Legends, where long cutscenes and a drawn-out tutorial phase killed my investment in the game. It was April 7th, to be exact, and a new PlayStation blog post had just announced Abandoned, a "first-person horror survival shooter set in a highly detailed open world environment", as per the game's director, Hasan Kahraman.Developed by Blue Box Game Studios, Abandoned was revealed as a PlayStation 5 exclusive targeting a Q4 2021 release, which always seemed like an optimistic proposition considering the same post stated that Abandoned was "at an early development stage," so no gameplay could be shown. That means Blue Box had around 4 to 6 months to go from early development stages to full release. From the get-go, something seemed fishy about Abandoned. But Abandoned's hopeful release window was just the beginning of what would become a whirlwind of controversy, rumours, conspiracy theories, and some good-old fashioned delusional craziness.abandoned screenshotREAD MORE: Flashlight Weapons Suck In Games. Can Alan Wake 2 Fix That?Shortly after Abandoned was announced via the PlayStation website, a Reddit post appeared, suggesting that Abandoned and its creator, Hasan Kahraman, was actually just a facade for a new Hideo Kojima game. The connections grew and grew over the course of many months, but the initial post references Kahraman and Kojima sharing the same initials, Blue Box potentially being a Death Stranding easter egg due to the letters 'BB', and the fact that this is exactly the kind of oddball innocent mischief that Kojima tends to get up to.Back in 2012, Kojima secretly revealed Metal Gear Solid V as simply "The Phantom Pain" under a new studio known as Moby Dick Studio. The game was supposedly led by Joakim Mogren, but fans quickly worked out that Mogren's first name was an anagram for Kojima. So, when you take into account that Kojima has actually done this before, it's understandable for fans to speculate that he might be doing it again. But then, less than 24 hours after the announcement of Abandoned, a statement was issued via Blue Box's official website, shutting down the theories making connections between Abandoned and Hideo Kojima. "We have no association with Hideo Kojima nor do we claim to have any association nor was it our intention to claim such a statement. We are a small group of developers working on a passionate title we wanted to work on for a long time." the statement read. But once the internet gets its claws stuck into something, it doesn't like to let go. IGN then published an interview with Kahraman on April 8th - still less than 24 hours after the game's announcement - where he continued to express that neither he nor Blue Box has any form of affiliation with renowned video game auter, Hideo Kojima.abandoned screenshot 2READ MORE: The Stardew Valley Dev's Lack Of Greed Blows My MindAt this point in time, very little was actually known about Abandoned. PlayStation's blog post teased a different kind of first-person shooter compared to the modern-day norm, stating that Abandoned "requires you to hide and plan every shot before pulling the trigger." Kahraman went on to reveal further details about the game to IGN, "We wanted to make a game that feels real. Like when reloading, you get to see the whole animation, while in combat. Or when you get hit, you really need to stop the bleeding in order to continue fighting."So, the game itself certainly sounds like an interesting mix of genres, which Kahraman describes as a "first-person horror survival shooter" in the announcement post. But sadly, Abandoned's controversy isn't just confined to crazy fan theories. After a pretty wild 24 hours for Blue Box, it was all quiet until May 30th, when the studio announced via a now-deleted tweet that Abandoned would be receiving a real-time trailer app on June 20th. The app was apparently going to reveal new gameplay trailers that were rendered in real-time, thanks to the hardware of the PlayStation 5.Despite the continued denial by Kahraman, a large number of fans continued to speculate on the connection between Abandoned and Hideo Kojima. Then, to make things even worse, another now-deleted tweet by Blue Box hinted at the name of Abandoned actually being Silent Hill. The tweet read, "Guess the name: Abandoned = (First letter S, Last letter L). Reveal closing in..." For the unaware, Hideo Kojima was working on a new Silent Hill game with movie director Guillermo del Toro years earlier, but the project was canceled in 2015 after Kojima split ways with publisher Konami.abandonedREAD MORE: My First Level In Remnant 2 Was Basically Bloodborne, For Better And WorseAs you can imagine, it didn't take long for Blue Box to apologise for the misunderstanding and attempt to set the record straight. In a tweet that actually hasn't been deleted, Blue Box said, "We wanted to set things straight. We have no relations with Konami. Silent Hill is owned by Konami. We do not have any relations with Hideo Kojima. It was never our intention to tease the name as Silent Hill. We sincerely apologize for this."Blue Box then announced that the previously announced real-time app was being delayed to June 25 due to "localization issues." Fair enough, these things happen. But when June 25 rolled around, a video update from Hasan appeared on the Blue Box Twitter account, announcing that the app still wasn't ready and would be pushed to the beginning of August. So August rolls around, and the app launches. Well, kind of...it's broken. So, Blue Box patches the app a few days later. After almost a month of back-and-forth, is it finally time to check out these real-time trailers Blue Box had promised us? No, the app consisted of a 4-second clip of a man walking, which had already been posted to Blue Box's Twitter account before the launch of the app. As you can imagine, fans weren't happy.

<![CDATA[Putting Dion in Final Fantasy 16 Is A Step Forward For LGBTQIA+ Inclusion]]> For 20 years now, I’ve been playing Final Fantasy games. They’ve become a staple to my life, and not a year goes by that I’m not playing one of the entries, and not just because I’ve been playing Final Fantasy 14 since beta. There are many things I’ve come to expect from the series, including a new compelling story to follow and heroes that will bring up a series of emotions within me.

<![CDATA[This Sci-Fi Thriller Game Gives Nolan A Run For His Money]]> This article contains spoilers for many of 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim's plot. Here's a thing about me. While I appreciate Barbie's candy-colored social commentary, I can't deny that I'm an Oppenheimer guy at the end of the day. Black-and-white scenes symbolizing historical events, and color scenes representing subjective perspectives; the plot is as haphazard and incomprehensible as you would expect from Nolan, but I would argue that 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is no less bonkers in these departments.

<![CDATA[Left 4 Dead Weaponizes Your Hearing Into Fear]]> Left 4 Dead has established itself as the zombie co-op game. While its addictive gameplay and memorable characters have set it above so many others, there is one key element that makes it so timeless, and that is its sound design. From sound cues that announce a special infected's appearance to the fantastically freaky music that blasts in your ears as a horde assails you, Left 4 Dead makes your own ears your worst enemy.

<![CDATA[Sorry Starfield, But I Only Have Room For One Epic RPG In 2023]]> It’s not often that an epic, endlessly deep RPG gets released that threatens to consume our entire being for the next several months—there was The Witcher 3 in 2015, Skyrim in 2011, Elden Ring last year. The rarity of that grand RPG experience is part of what makes it special. It’s something that requires legitimate preparation: forewarning your friends that you may be a ‘bit busy for a while,’ figuring out if you can blag some sick days off work, stockpiling cans of beans in the larder, and setting keyword alerts for takeaway voucher codes.

<![CDATA[I Miss Monster Hunter Tri’s Underwater Combat]]> The Monster Hunter series has never shied away from introducing mechanics that drastically changed things up. Monster Hunter 4, for instance, introduced mounting monsters and jumping to encourage vertical gameplay, which became a staple mechanic in all the games since. One mechanic that didn't quite catch on, however, was the underwater combat from Monster Hunter Tri, and I think it deserves to reemerge.

<![CDATA[All Hail To The King, The Unsung Hero Of Fallout: New Vegas]]> I don’t know exactly what it is, but every bone in my body tells me not to trust a man who’s a walking gimmick. Whether that gimmick is embodying a certain rock-and-roll pioneer or wearing ominous clown make-up, it doesn’t matter. When someone has dedicated their life to being a walking manifestation of something, you just don’t know what they’re really thinking, what they’re really feeling behind their slick veneer.

<![CDATA[Play Marvel's Avengers Story Before It's Too Late]]> Marvel's Avengers launched at the wrong time. Arriving over a year after Avengers: Endgame, the pinnacle of MCU's connected storytelling, the game found itself at the beginning of both superhero and live-service fatigue. Despite its live-service origins though, the title packs a surprisingly good story campaign. With Avengers leaving Game Pass on July 31, and getting delisted from digital storefronts on September 30, don't miss your chance to play through it before it's gone for good, especially as it's only several hours long.

<![CDATA[Yes, Final Fantasy X's Infamous 'Laugh Scene' Was Cringe, But That Was The Point]]> This past year saw me revisiting one of my favorite games of all time: Final Fantasy 10. While it wasn’t my first RPG ever (that title goes to Final Fantasy 8), I credit ‘X’ with elevating my love of the genre and making it a lifelong pursuit of mine. There are many reasons why I love it (not least of all my personal queer icon Yuna). There are many scenes that, even today, warm my heart, bring a tear to my eye, or make me laugh out loud.

<![CDATA[I Wish Baldur's Gate 3 Did Origin Stories Like Octopath Traveler 2]]> Ah, the noble companion. A staple of many RPGs worldwide, but especially ubiquitous in the broad genre known as JRPGs. Anecdotally, if one were to poll players on their favourite character in any given party-based RPG, chances are, they wouldn’t choose the protagonist but rather one of their plucky companions. Players form a strong attachments to these characters, just look at some of the legendary companions gaming has given us over the years. Kreia, Morrigan, Minsc, Garrus (BioWare have made some good RPGs, eh?), Serana, Aerith - the list goes on.
