Giving your character an edge or buff in a game is a great way to take something that seems too challenging and makes it feel more manageable.

Baldur’s Gate 3’s Momentum is one such edge for players to make use of. This buff will allow a character to move further than they normally could and allows them to reach a target that would otherwise be out of reach or, at the very least, harder to hit than normal.

What Is Momentum

Momentum in Baldur’s Gate 3 will allow characters to have an additional 3 meters of movement. So, a character that is normally limited to 9 meters will now be able to traverse 12 meters in the same movement action. So long as they keep having access to Momentum, they will keep being able to move 12 meters on each of their turns.

If your character moves away each turn while using their action to make ranged attacks, this would turn a total of 27 meters worth of movement and make it 36 meters, even more if your character is a Wood Elf. This prevents enemies with higher base movement than your character from being able to catch up to them, thanks to this buff.

How To Get Momentum

Baldur's Gate 3 Momentum granting items

Momentum is obtained by any means that mentions it. It could be on a weapon, piece of armor, and other such items. Boots of Striding will let you gain Momentum while you are casting a spell that requires concentration. Haste Helm will give you Momentum for 3 turns when a combat encounter starts. There are all manner of different items in the game that can grant you Momentum, and deciding which characters would benefit most from it will greatly come down to how you have chosen to build your party of adventurers.

Losing Momentum

Baldur's Gate 3 Entangle Spell

Just as easily as you can gain Momentum, it can just as easily be taken away from you. You will lose all the benefits of Moment when you are Incapacitated, Prone, Restrained, or Slowed.

Frontliners with it should close the gap as soon as possible, and more glassy characters should use it to gain some ground. Use it while you have it. Entangle is a dangerous low-level spell to instantly shut down your Momentum.
