How many players thoroughly enjoying Baldur's Gate 3 ever thought they would speak with an ox during their adventures? Probably zero! But that's the magical world of Dungeons & Dragons, where a Strange Ox in Baldur's Gate 3 captivates the crowd and opens the door to a unique story unlike any other.

Upon entering Druid Grove, or Emerald Grove, as some locals call it these days, players will immediately note something is off. The entire area is on edge, awaiting the next goblin assault, but one character requires a keen eye to scope out, and he's pretty relaxed compared to the overall atmosphere in the area!

What Is The Strange Ox?

Baldur's Gate 3 The Strange Ox

Shortly after wandering past Arron and the arguing Tieflings upon entering Druid Grove, players will note to the right-hand side of the path is a small makeshift pen with a few oxen idly chewing grass and making the occasional grunting noise. All seems well and ordinary at first glance, but it's not. If players hover over the oxen in curiosity, they'll note that the last and smallest of the bunch is actually named 'Strange Ox' instead of something, you know, normal.

Depending on who is in the player's party at the time, one of the companions may comment on the odd beast. It's certainly not a typical interaction, and those who can speak to animals can interact with the bizarre creature a little more. Unfortunately, it's not a listed quest in the game, and the interaction doesn't bear much fruit.

But, should the player opt for an evil playthrough, killing the strange ox in Baldur's Gate 3 can lead to great rewards. First and foremost, the ox will explode in a shower of acid, leaving behind the Shapeshifter's Boon Ring. It's definitely something else other than an ox hiding in plain sight! Likely a spellcaster?

How To Speak To The Ox

Baldur's Gate 3 Speak With the Strange Ox

Should the player choose to speak with the strange ox in Druid Grove, a unique spell known as Speak With Animals is a firm requirement. It allows a character to speak with the creature, and Druids, Bards, or Warlocks can learn this ability. Alternatively, players may use the Potion of Animal Speaking.

However, after talking with the ox, the creature will not share any details with the player. Players must use Deception, Intimidation, or Persuasion to get him to open up a bit more and pass a tough skill check. While the ox remains rather tight-lipped, he will share his plans. The ox intends to travel to Baldur's Gate, with or without help, and that's all he's willing to offer. Even if the player successfully passes all skill checks, the ox will not provide further explanation or information.

Perhaps players will discover this strange ox in Baldur's Gate sometime later?
