10 Lae’zel

player character talking to Lae'zel in baldur's gate 3

Lae’zel is one of the first characters you will meet in the game period. The only character you will meet before her is the talking brain at the very beginning of the game. When you first meet her, she will have staged an ambush and attack you. However, you quickly become allies.

Lae’zel is a special case in this game. She is an amazingly strong ally, and someone you will want in your party. However, she is a little aggressive at times. What makes her great is that, if you get to know her, you will figure out the only reason she is the way she is that it's how she was raised.

9 The Guardian

Baldur's Gate 3 Best Backgrounds Folk Hero

The guardian is a mysterious being that you will first be able to design and create during your character creation. Not much is known about them to begin with, however, the longer you play, the more this being becomes relevant.

It seems that they may have a similar issue to yours and want to help you if they can. It is up to you whether you want to trust them or not. What makes this being so great is that it add a whole different level to the game. It gives players the opportunity to trust their gut or go out on a limb.

8 Wyll

Wyll is a devil hunter hunting the very devil placed at the top of this list. You can find him in the Druid’s Grove, teaching the young Tieflings some different spells to help them out. He is more than willing to join you in order to fulfill his mission.

You will soon find out why Wyll is one of the best characters in the game. He is another companion with a dark and tragic past. Turns out, he is a servant of one of the devils of hell, selling his soul to her for something that will become apparent the longer you know him.

7 Jaheira

Baldur's Gate 3 Jaheria

Jaheria is a returning character from past Baldur’s Gate games. She can be first encountered during your adventures in the Shadow Cursed Lands. Her goal is to keep the people in the land protect while she searches for a way to stop the Shadow Curse from spreading.

Once you finish Act 2, if you make all the required choices (do not kill the Nightsong), then you can recruit her to your party. This will allow you to keep her with you as long as you want. Once again, the more you learn about her, the more you will begin to understand why players love her.

6 Mol

Baldur's Gate 3 Mol

Mol is a Tiefling that you will meet in Druid’s Grove. She is the leader of the group of kids that live within the Grove, and she very much cares about their wellbeing. She seems to be the only one who is consistently ensuring that the kids are safe.

RELATED: Baldur's Gate 3's Simultaneous Turns Are The Right Kind Of ChaosWhen you first meet her, she will encourage the kids to steal your belongings. This can be pretty difficult to get back, but thankfully, they are willing to give them back. You then learn that the kids want to help the Tieflings out. If you spare the Tieflings, you will find Mol again in the Shadow Cursed Lands. There, she is still trying to find a way to keep the kids safe.

5 Astarion

Astarion is probably the third companion you will meet in the game. You can find him on the beach after the ship wrecks. At first, he too comes across as an arrogant person. He is a Wood Elf noble, and certainly acts like you might expect.

However, once again, his backstory adds so much to his character. You find out very early on that he is actually a vampire and has been forced into servitude for the past 200 years. Suddenly, his attitude doesn’t seem so bad. The more you get to know him, the more you realize he is just to make the most of his situation.

4 Gale

Baldur's Gate 3 Wizard Gale Headshot

Gale is another one of your intriguing allies. You will meet him while walking around Druid’s Grove. He is directly outside the settlement, and it turns out he was on the ship with you. His mission is to help you both get the tadpole out of your mind.

He is another character whose backstory will attract players. At first, he seems like an arrogant Mage, nothing more, nothing less. However, like all your companions, the more you learn about him, the more you realize how deeply tragic he is.

3 Your Character

Baldur's Gate 3 - Created Character

A list of the best characters in a game usually cannot be completed without the player’s character, and this list is no different. Your character is the savior of the game, the one who is able to enlist their allies to fight alongside them to end the Mind Slayers once and for all.

What makes your character so special is that they are who you want them to be. That is the beauty of role-playing games, you get to take on the character. While your character is the savior in the end, you get to decide if they did it in a good, evil, or morally gray way.

2 Shadowheart

Baldur's Gate 3 Shadowheart Camp Wear

Shadowheart is a much more tragic character than you may originally think. She is one of the first companions you will meet. She can be found in a pod on the ship at the beginning of the game. If you don’t help her, you can meet her once the ship goes down.

Her backstory is what makes her so appealing. Even though she tells you she is a worshiper of Shar, she doesn’t come across as some worshipers of the Goddess seem to be. The better you get to know her, the more you realize she may not be who she thinks that she is.

1 Karlach

Baldur's Gate 3 Karlach the Warrior

Karlach is a powerful Tiefling Barbarian. At first, you will meet her between Druid’s Grove and the Blighted Village. When you meet her, you will learn that she is the Tiefling that your companion, Wyll, is hunting.

She has escaped hell and is trying to make a run for it to live a better life. One reason she is so endearing is her character’s personality. She is one of the most hilarious and interesting characters in the game. Her interactions with you and your companions are the best.
