Baldur's Gate 3 is chock-full of optional content - much of which is clearly designed to highlight a specific Ability Score or Class. Examples include loot under very heavy rocks, traps that need disarming, or small openings called burrow holes and crevices.
However, while the rocks are clearly meant for someone strong, and the traps are clearly meant for the resident Rogue, how is the crevice meant to be bypassed? Keep reading to find out all the known ways to use these small openings, as well as what types of rewards you can expect to find on the other side.
Updated by Abigail Angell on August 22nd, 2023: Due to the Wildshape mechanic being core to the use of Crevices and Burrow Holes, an in-text link to an article explaining this mechanic has been added. Additionally, all spells now have a link to an explanatory page about the spell.
How To Find Burrows Holes & Crevices
These small openings are typically found with a Perception check as you travel the Wilderness. Walking near a discoverable Burrow Hole or Crevice will prompt everyone in your party to roll a check, and you'll be able to highlight & select the opening if at least one character succeeds.
To ensure you find them all, walk around each area with high Wisdom characters - Halsin or Shadowheart are good choices. If, for some reason, your entire party fails a check, you can return after switching out companions or summon a familiar to prompt a new check.
How To Enter Burrow Holes
Burrow Holes, not to be confused with the loot container called a Burrow, are very small openings that allow players to travel to a new area. In order to access them, you'll need to become about the size of the animals that make them. The current known methods of entering a Burrow Hole are:
- Casting Gaseous Form
- Wildshape into a Cat
- Cast Enlarge/Reduce on a Gnome or Halfling character to reduce their size
- Disguise yourself as a Gnome or Halfling, then cast Enlarge/Reduce
Disappointingly, you cannot send your familiar into Burrow Holes, even if you summon the Cat. This may be a decision by Larian to avoid frustrated players, as familiars cannot unlock doors or pick up loot.
How To Enter Crevices
Crevices are larger than Burrow Holes, meaning that they are easier to get into. All the same, methods used on Burrow Holes will work here, plus a couple more:
- Halflings and Gnomes can enter normally
- Cast Enlarge/Reduce on a medium-sized character
- Cast Disguise Self on a medium-sized character to become a Halfling or Gnome
- Wildshape into a Cat
- Cast Gaseous Form
It is currently unknown whether you can Misty Step through Crevices, and it is worth checking out. The spell is often used this way in the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop game and is one of the best utility spells.
