How To Play With Friends

Baldur's Gate 3 - Play With Friends Menu

If you want to play with your friends, you will need to turn on multiplayer. This can be done from the main menu of the game. Once you click on it, you will be given the option to either join a party that someone has created or create your own. If you want to create your own party, all you need to do is select the “create” button at the bottom of the screen. You can select to either allow only friends in your party or to allow any players who want to join.

Joining A Single-Player Game

If you want to join a single-player game with your friends, you can do so by one of you getting onto your single-player game. From there, you can select “session” from your menu. This will allow you to invite friends to your own game. Each player can then be assigned to control specific party members. This allows you to continue your playthrough while letting your friends control the already-established party members. For instance, if you join a friend's game, you can play as characters such as Shadowheart, Karlach, Astarion, etc.

Creating A Multiplayer Game

Baldur's Gate 3 - Play With Friends Single Play Campaign

If you want to start a multiplayer game specifically for playing with friends, you can make a new game from scratch. Here, you’re all able to create your own character to play rather than playing the already established party members. This version gives players more control over the character they play as. However, any custom character made in a multiplayer game will stay in the party. Even if your friend leaves, their character is permanently part of your party. If your friends have a multiplayer game, and you join, you will be forced to create a character. You cannot play as any other character.

How Does Multiplayer Work

Characters are able to walk around the map and do whatever they wish to do. There is no split-screen or couch co-op at the moment, so you aren’t restrained by staying close to one another. There is also no PvP. You are able to fight one another, but there is no reason to do so. Finally, if you start dialogue while playing, your friends can suggest what to say to the character.
