Baldur's Gate 3 is a game full of unpredictable possibilities. From the gear you sport to each interaction with another character, you can never guess at what might happen next. Outside the endless chances and outcomes of the game, another complex set of choices is asked of players, even before they start playing the game. That is, of course, the character creator. This function in Baldur's Gate 3 gives players the chance to craft their very own unique-looking character, as well as choosing from various class and ability options.

So, the character creator presents a huge amount of personalization and customization for each one of the playable races in the game. These player-created characters will be present in every cut-scene, awkward interaction, and ability-check dice roll, so getting your character just right is important because you'll be stuck with your character's look for the entire game length.

Races

There are 11 available races in Baldur's Gate 3, and choosing what species you are will have a lasting effect on your overall look and skill-set throughout the game. The options are Elf, Half-elf, Halfing, Half-orc, Drow, High Elf, Dwarf, Githyanki, Human, Dwarf, and Tiefling. Each race has certain abilities, bonuses, and factions that give them certain incentives in combining with various classes. For example, the Elf (which is like a High Elf) gets an extra bonus ability, so they pair exceptionally well with classes that benefit from lots of spells, like Wizards and Clerics. Choosing your race will also have the biggest overall effect on your custom character's look, so choose wisely and explore the race options thoroughly.

Appearance

The "Appearance" options to the right is where you will tweak your character's look much more than just choosing a simple race. This portion focuses on your characters face (and some genitals) and really is the main aspect of the character creator in Baldur's Gate 3. It's in this section where players will create the face of the character that they will be looking at for countless hours as they attempt to roll dice for checks, survive epic battles, and socialize or terrorize the local NPC population. So take your time.

General

General is the first customized option that shows up in the character creator. It's here where players can scroll down and select the basics of their character's facial features. If you're feeling overloaded with too many options in the character creator, try using the "Randomize Appearance" button at the bottom right. Clicking this around 10 or 20 times should give you an option that you're happy with, in case you aren't the type that wants to sit around choosing eye colors.

Body Types & Identity

Body Types gives the players 4 options to choose from and offers 2 sets of types (male and female-looking) with 2 size variations in a basic "normal" and "larger" size. It's important to note that the character creator's "male" and "female" option, chosen in the "Identity" section, is a label alone and doesn't change the look of any character. With a "non-binary" option, players have the entirety of the character creator's options at hand at all times and are not limited in any way.

Voice & Face

The next set of choices players will run into are the different voices, facial bases, and skin color options. The voice of your character can be chosen out of a good selection of different options, and matching the vibe of your custom character to the right voice is a great feeling. Next comes faces, and there are several different baseline faces that players can pick from. If you don't love the faces, don't worry too much, because you'll be able to tweak and personalize your character's face to a much higher degree going forward. There aren't a ton of faces to choose from, so simply try picking the one that you like best, knowing that you can change it more from here. If you really dislike the facial options, try changing the Body Type for a different set of faces, each race will have two sets.

Skin Colour & Genitals

For skin color, keep in mind that this is a DnD game, so there are options from normal human skin tones to wild fantasy ones of red, green, yellow, and blue. Other options that you can add to your character's face include levels of scarring, maturity (wrinkles), freckle quality, freckle intensity, vitiligo pigmentation. You can also choose your character's genitals in this section. There are 8 to choose from with a few basic forms that sport "hairy" and "less-hairy" options. If you'd rather not focus on your character's digital private parts (or even see them at all), you can ignore this feature in character creator and simply not romance any characters in the game (there is also an option to turn off nudity that pops when starting a new game).

Body Art & Eyes

The next two tabs on the far right feature Body Art and Eyes. Not to be confused with Makeup, Body Art is more akin to tattoos and is featured just on the face and not really the body. You can change the color and intensity of each Body Art option and can make some both very dramatic and subtle looks out of these possibilities. Eyes is next and, aside from the normal eye colors, there is a whole range of fantasy options to choose from. Players can also click the "Heterochromia" option to split their eye colors into two different ones.

Makeup & Hair

Makeup is the next option and isn't excessively complicated. The Makeup tab will allow you to add various types and styles of eyeshadow and lip color. Here, you can also change the color of the makeup applied, with sliding ranges of intensity, metallic, and glossy levels possible. Hair comes next and features a large amount of hairstyles to choose from. After picking your favorite hairdo, you can then pick out of three colors: main hair, highlights, and gray levels. The important thing to keep in mind is that your character should reflect whatever you want them to look like. So whether it's something that you role-play or you'd simply like your Baldur's Gate 3 character to look awesome, the character creator has truly endless options.
