Baldur's Gate 3 is a game of choices. From the first time you open the character creation screen to every time you engage in dialogue with an NPC, BG3 gives you options to choose and slaps you with the consequences of your choices every chance it gets.

One of the most impactful choices you'll make in your playthrough is customizing your character by choosing your class, subclass, ability point spread, and things of that nature. Although these choices seem locked in stone at first glance, they are anything but. As you progress through the game, you'll encounter an undead NPC, Withers, who will be able to help you respec your character. For a price, of course.

Where To Find Withers

Withers is located in the Dank Crypt, an area you'll find very early on in the game. After you escape the Illithid Ship at the start of the game, you'll find yourself stranded on a beach. Directly north of where you land, you'll see the Ancient Temple visible on the map.

  1. Enter the Ancient Temple either by dealing with the Bandits that surround its entrance. You can either convince them to leave using dialogue checks or kill them in combat.
  2. Once inside, you'll want to find a button on the wall at the far end of the crypt in the room to the left of the central statue.
  3. This button can only be found after you pass a perception check. The difficulty is fairly low this early on, but just in case, save before nearing the statue and reload if all your characters fail the perception check.

  4. Activating the button will open a door with a sarcophagus inside as well as revive a group of skeletons you will need to defeat. Fight off the skeletons and enter the room with the tomb.

  5. Interact with the tomb, and it will reveal Withers, who will exit the tomb. He will ask the player the question, "What is the worth of a single mortal's life?" Pick any option, as the response to this question does not seem to matter. You can choose any option and still unlock Withers' respec ability.

How To Respec Using Withers

After you've interacted with Withers for the first time, exit the area and set up camp. You'll find Withers as an interactable NPC inside your camp. Talk to Withers, and he will give you the option to respec your character for 100 Gold.

Click on this option, and you'll be able to respec. This will allow you to rebuild your character by choosing any class, subclass, feat, and stat spread you want. While 100 Gold might seem daunting at first, it is a small price to pay for essentially getting a full redo of your every choice so far.

You cannot change your character's appearance, race, or background. You can only make these changes during the initial character creation.
