There is more to Final Fantasy 16 than just amassing a list of the best Eikon abilities. There is a whole world to explore and what better way to explore it than on the back of a Chocobo. Chocobos have been a staple in every Final Fantasy game and serve as one of the Mascot characters for the franchise, alongside Moogles. Just like in some of the previous Final Fantasy games, Clive can mount and ride a Chocobo of his own.

However, this won’t be a fast task to go and pick up, and you will need to progress through the story for quite a while before you can ride Ambrosia the Chocobo. Once you have them, you can explore and take in the beautifully crafted world before you, unless you would rather play in performance mode.

How Soon Can You Get A Chocobo?

You can unlock your very own Chocobo around the game's midway point while your level is somewhere between the early to mid-20s. This means you will still have plenty of time to use your Chocobo while still playing the main story, but you won't be getting them early into your adventure. This will mean you will be running around quite a lot on foot. The Quest that will unlock Ambrosia needs you to have already completed the Main Quest known as Release. After you have completed Release, you will have access to the map with the Side Quest, The White Winged Wonder.

Head on over to Martha’s Rest where you will find the NPC that will give you the quest. From there, head to the quest marker to receive a cutscene involving a Chocobo feather. You will see another marker has been placed. There are enemies between you and the marker; you can choose to face them or walk around them, as they are irrelevant to the quest.

Once you get to the marker, you will need to fight a range of enemies. Have some crowd control abilities to group them up and deal lots of damage simultaneously. If you are having trouble handling this group, you can save your limit break for the end of the fight when only one enemy is left, or you can try to gain a few more levels with the other quests and fast-travel back. You will receive a cutscene with Ambrosia. Complete the quest, and you will now have a Chocobo mount and a new curiosity for your collection.
