Final Fantasy 16 gives Clive a massive skill tree of abilities to learn and master. As you unlock new Eikons, additional skill trees for that Eikon will become available. Of skills you have access to, you can upgrade and respec them in any order you'd like, giving an incredible amount of freedom on how to play.

One major skill absent from the game's early sections is the ability Limit Break. Limit Breaking has Clive semi-prime, increasing his damage output and also healing him as he fights. Limit Breaking is one of the most important skills in your arsenal and should be used accordingly.

Unlocking And Upgrading Limit Break

FF16 Clive & Ifrit

Through the main campaign, Clive will return to Phoenix Gate and begin the mission "Buried Memories." This mission will have Clive and Jill exploring Fallen ruins and will end with Clive unlocking some new abilities, namely his Limit Break. Limit Breaking will have Clive semi-prime, increasing his damage while negating his damage received while also giving him health back on successful hits.

After Limit Break has been unlocked, it becomes an upgradeable skill within the skill tree. Its first upgrade will cost 1,000 AP, while the second upgrade will cost 2,000 AP. These upgrades will increase the number of bars for the Limit Break, allowing you to stay semi-primed for longer in combat.

How To Use Limit Break

Clive Using Limit Break In Combat

To use Limit Break, press down L3 and R3 at the same time when you have some energy in the Limit Break bar. While active, the bar will be quickly drained no matter what action you are doing, so make every second count. To earn energy for your limit break, simply land attacks on enemies while not Limit Breaking. Landing skills also increase your energy, with Garuda's Gouge ability being extra efficient with its many individual attacks. Limit Break can also be used with any amount of energy after the first bar is filled, not requiring you to fill every bar before activating it. After the first bar, the energy will turn orange, indicating that it can be activated. Limit Break can also be canceled by pressing L3 and R3, but this will lose any remaining energy not used.

Limit Break is best used against staggered enemies, as it multiplies your usual damage, and staggered enemies take further multiplied damage. Landing attacks while semi-primed will also recover Clive's lost HP, making it a useful way of quickly healing him in combat without using items. You can also use Lionheart Tonics to regain Limit Break energy to quickly use the ability again in difficult battles.
