Final Fantasy games have had a staggering amount of items, not as high a number as you will need to stagger in Final Fantasy 16 though. You will make use of these items as you learn more about the game throughout your playthrough, especially when fairing against a boss. Some of these items are a much bigger help than others. You will even find yourself using some less and less and then not even bothering with them entirely once you have significantly superior items.

There are a total of 7 consumables that you will manage throughout your journey, but due to how specific they are, there is not much need to worry about which ones will work better for different bosses, as they all revolve around how you play the game.

7 Potion

Final Fantasy 16 Consumables Potion

One of the earliest items you will come to know is the trusty potion. This consumable will instantly restore 24% of your maximum hit points once used. This will be your go-to healing item for the earlier portions of the game and will keep you in whatever fight you have at hand. Of course, there is a different item you will use if you see a significantly larger chunk of your health get taken away in a single hit.

You are able to get your hands on this consumable by heading to Charon’s Toll and paying 200 Gil. Its in-game description reads as follows, “Curative infusions of common herbs found growing throughout Valisthea, potions are administered to most frontline soldiers as an inexpensive and less dramatic alternative to the barber’s blade.”

6 High Potion

The High Potion will be your course of action when you see at least half of your health is missing, and you don’t want to waste time using two potions. The High Potion consumable will instantly restore 48% of your hit points. That is twice as much as your standard potion. Do not use this item while your health is above half, as it can mean wasted restored health in times when you will be in dire need of every little bit to clear a very close fight.

You are able to get your hands on this consumable by heading to Charon’s Toll and paying 400 Gil. Its in-game description reads as follows, “Potent infusions of common herbs found growing throughout Valisthea, high potions are administered to seriously injured frontline soldiers when infirmary treatment is impractical.”

5 Elixir

Final Fantasy 16 Consumables Elixer

Elixir is a consumable you will be getting much later in the game. This item will instantly restore 100% of your hit points. This is an item you hold onto until the very end or when your health is at a threshold when any follow-up attack will finish you off. You may think an item that heals you for 100% is as good as it gets; nay, there is something even better later on in this list. You are able to get your hands on this consumable by heading to Charon’s Toll and paying a whopping 10,000 Gil, a significant jump from the High Potion.

Its in-game description reads as follows, “Affluent nobles obsessed with finding the secret to eternal life have created an unprecedented demand for this quality herbal concoction, heretofore rarely used outside of battle. As such, its asking price has bloated to so great an extent that few soldiers can actually afford it.”

4 Stoneskin Tonic

What is better than healing lost health, reducing the amount of health that you are able to lose? Once applied, you will receive 30% less damage from all sources for 99 seconds. So, for every 100 points of damage, you instead take 70 points of damage and can still use healing items. You are able to get your hands on this consumable by heading to Charon’s Toll and paying 700 Gil.

This, in essence, simulates having a larger health pool and increasing the effectiveness of your healing items for the next 99 seconds. No matter how you look at it, that is some great value. Its in-game description reads as follows, “The wave of euphoria induced by this foul-smelling brew grants those who drink it delusions of invulnerability. It is widely consumed by soldiers seeking to toughen their own hides, however briefly.”

3 Strength Tonic

Strength Tonic is the polar opposite of Stoneskin, although it is not as effective. This tonic will increase all the damage you deal by 10% and lasts 66 seconds. If you have no plans on getting hit, then this is a clear winner for helping you dispatch all threats on the field much faster, meaning you use fewer potions for when you do take a hit.

You are able to get your hands on this consumable by heading to Charon’s Toll and paying 600 Gil. Its in-game description reads as follows, “The wave of euphoria induced by this foul-smelling brew grants those who drink it delusions of power. It is widely consumed by soldiers seeking to bolster their sword arms, however briefly.”

2 Lionheart Tonic

This tonic is something you will want to use the moment a fight starts, as it will immediately start filling up your Limit Break gauge for the next 33 seconds. More Limit Breaks mean significantly more damage. If you already have a Limit Break ready, then use this the moment you have used it up to work towards your next one.

You may be thinking to yourself that you don’t want to sink thousands of Gil into this item like with an Elixir. No worries, this item only costs 500 Gil. Its in-game description reads as follows, “It is said that one’s own limits are made to be broken, but that doing so is easier said than done. Fortunately, there are ways of convincing the mind that such improbable feats are not only possible but readily within reach—this tonic being one of them.”

1 Last Elixir

Final Fantasy 16 Consumables Last Elixer

This is the single most effective healing item you can have. Once your hit points are reduced to 0, this item will prevent you from dying and instead fully restore your health, fill up your Limit Break gauge, increase your attack by 10%, and increase your defense by 30%.

Some fans feel this is a missed opportunity to include some mention of Phoenix Down, which is synonymous with the Final Fantasy games for reviving KOed allies, although, Elixir has been used in a more accurate sense for this item. The price of this item is an utterly outrageous 20,000 Gil, and Its in-game description is as follows, “Is it the easiest elixir to procure? No. But it is the last one you will ever need.”
