The moment you completed the Diablo 4 prologue and were set free in the city of Kyovashad, if you're the type of player that's prone to explore, chances are you ran into the Purveyor of Curiosities, a shady-looking vendor that seemingly sells very simple items in a different purple currency.

Given that the items they're selling have no discernible description, and you can't buy any of them so early, it's very possible you walked away from them completely lost as to how they work.

How Does The Purveyor Of Curiosities Work?

Diablo 4 How Purveyor Of Curiosities

Essentially, the Purveyor of Curiosities (of which there are several strewn throughout the world map) is a slot-machine-like vendor from whom you can buy a random item for a specific gear slot, meaning a random helm, chest, weapon, etc. The items can be as useless as simple commons with little to no stat bonuses, but they can also be legendaries.

The fortunate thing is that you don't purchase these random items with your standard Gold currency. You purchase them a different currency, the so-called Murmuring Obols, which you acquire by completing world events (a more detailed explanation of how you can most optimally farm Murmuring Obols can be found here).

Since the Murmuring Obols' only use is to spend them on the Purveyor of Curiosities, there's essentially no drawback to rolling for as many items as you can afford.

Where Can You Find Purveyor Of Curiosities?

Diablo 4 Purveyor Where

There's a Purveyor Of Curiosities in essentially every major city in Sanctuary, but they each sell the same items for the same prices. Therefore, you won't have to go farther than the starting city of Kyovashad.

However, it could be that you struggle to find the vendor once inside the city, so, the image above will help you out with that. Whether in Kyovashad or anywhere else, all Purveyor Of Curiosities have the same icon on the minimap, a money bag with a question mark.

Purveyor Of Curiosities Prices

The list below details each type of gear piece/weapon the Purveyor Of Curiosities sells and its price. Note that the item names on your game may vary, as One-Handed and Two-Handed weapons encompass all weapons, and your vendor is only going to show the ones that are usable by your specific class.

  • Two-Handed Weapons - 75 Murmuring Obols
  • Bows - 75 Murmuring Obols
  • Amulet - 60 Murmuring Obols
  • Ring - 40 Murmuring Obols
  • One-Handed Weapons - 50 Murmuring Obols
  • Off-Hands - 40 Murmuring Obols
  • Cap - 40 Murmuring Obols
  • Tunic - 40 Murmuring Obols
  • Gloves - 40 Murmuring Obols
  • Boots - 40 Murmuring Obols
  • Pants - 40 Murmuring Obols
  • Whispering Key - 20 Murmuring Obols

What Are Whispering Keys?

Diablo 4 Purveyor Keys

Obviously, you can notice that the Purveyor sells one item that isn't a gear piece of any kind, the Whispering Keys. There's no randomness to these, their purchase will always net you the same Whispering Key. These are used to open Silent Chests. Silent Chests are strewn all across the Diablo 4 overworld and can't be opened any other way, so it's good to have one or two keys resting in your inventory, as you never know when you're going to run into one of them.
