Diablo 4 has an open world with several collectibles to be found in each region. These include Altars of Lilith, side quests, and special Strongholds locations. Connected to these is a new menu where players can track their Renown.

While Renown has some pretty sweet rewards behind it, the game doesn't really explain this statistic very well. Our guide is here to fill in the gaps in player knowledge about how to get renown, how to unlock the final two tiers, and how to track your progress.

What Is Renown?

Question Mark with shrugging sorceress

Renown is the statistic that lets a player know how close they are to completing an area. A total of 2000 points are required to complete stages 1-5, with each area having at least that much up for grabs. Most regions have a bit more maximum renown for you to claim (Fractured Peaks for example has 2,495 total Renown points).

Reaching stages of renown in an area will unlock account-wide rewards such as:

  • Potion charge increases
  • Ability points
  • Increased Obol capacity
  • Paragon points

Your renown is character locked, allowing you to start all over with each playthrough, however, you will only receive the above rewards for completing a tier once. The bonus gold and experience can be received multiple times.

How To Get More Renown

Because of the impressive boost Renown tier rewards give you, many players want to know how to get more. There are many ways to earn renown, including:

  • Discovering new areas of the map
  • Activating Waypoints
  • Clearing Strongholds
  • Finishing side quests
  • Completing side dungeons
  • Activating Altars of Lilith

You can see your progress on these objectives in an area by opening the map and hovering over the region with your cursor.

Where To See Your Renown

Renown can be viewed by opening the region progress menu. To open this page:

  1. Open your map, and hover your cursor above the region you'd like to check.
  2. Look on the far right-hand side of the top banner which shows your progress on collectibles.
  3. Press the button prompt next to "View Rewards." This will vary based on the system and key bindings you're using.

This screen is also where you'll be able to collect your rewards, so check back periodically.

How To Unlock World Tier 4 & 5

The last two tiers of Renown for each region, you'll notice, are locked on your initial playthrough of the game. This is because they are only available on higher world tiers. The minimum world tier to unlock the rest of your Renown progression is Nightmare (world tier 3).

Unlock Nightmare by meeting the following requirements:

  1. Be at least level 50
  2. Finish the campaign
  3. Complete the Cathedral of Light Capstone Dungeon

These achievements are no joke, especially for players new to the Diablo franchise, but they are the gateway to unlocking end-game content. Once you've unlocked Nightmare mode, change your world difficulty at the central statue of each town.
