Diablo 4's story has already received critical acclaim, but what about things to do once you've beaten the story? You can do side quests, hunt for the Altars of Lilith, engage in PvP, and complete bounties similar to Diablo 3. Grim Favors are the rewards given for the bounty mechanic for Diablo 4. They are unlocked after beating the campaign.

These favors are completed on behalf of the Tree of Whispers, which players encountered in Hawezar during Act 5. Keep reading for more about how to earn Grim Favors, how to unlock the bounty system, and possible rewards for completing bounties in Diablo 4.

How To Unlock Bounties

The Bounty system in Diablo 4 is governed by The Tree of Whispers. After completing the main story of the game, players will have the option to visit The Tree again in a Priority Quest. Speaking with the tree will trigger a dialogue sequence, during which the player's character agrees to hunt down those who owe the tree in return for favors.

Once this dialogue sequence is complete, there will be a quest objective to collect Whispers of the Dead in Caldeum. Complete red and pink objectives on the map in Caldeum until the Grim Favor bar is full to complete the objective. At this time, you will be able to return to the tree and select your first reward. This completes the quest and unlocks Bounties all over Sanctuary.

Where To Find The Tree Of Whispers

The Tree of Whispers has its own Waypoint in the Writhing Mire of the Hawezar region and is additionally marked by a skull on red branches. Here, you will find a Blacksmith, Jewelry Vendor, and a Stash. This Waypoint appears to be designed specifically for endgame activities, and it is one of the most efficient in the game in terms of NPC spacing and convenience.

How To Earn Grim Favors

To earn Grim Favors, players will have to complete several Bounties, called Whispers of the Dead. These are found on the map marked in various shades of red. Bounties spawn all over Sanctuary, but more seem to spawn in the Fields of Desecration Zones and Caldeum.

Events That Earn Grim Favor Progress

While each rewards differing amounts of progress toward a cache, they are scaled based on the time required to complete them. The result is that the best ones to complete will usually depend on personal preference rather than efficiency. Each Whisper collected yields experience, gold, and progress on the Grim Favor bar, but the real reward is when the bar is full, at which point players will need to return to the tree.

How Often Do Bounties Appear?

Whispers of the Dead marked on the world map change every fifty minutes, and you can claim up to one Grim Favor per day. This makes them a great option for casual and hardcore players alike, as they can be completed flexibly while doing other things.

How Many Bounties Per Grim Favor?

In order to collect a Grim Favor, you will need to collect ten Whispers of the Dead. Different marked events award different amounts based on difficulty. Darker red marks will yield more progress than their lighter counterparts, with the maximum being three.

Rewards For Completing Grim Favors

There are a number of rewards possible when cashing in Grim Favors — players will select a cache from three options, which yields several items rolled from a loot table. There are also several titles and achievements linked to the Tree of Whispers.

Gear & Material Rewards

The chances of particular rewards are determined by the cache the player chooses among three options. The possible cache types are:

  • 1-Handed Weapons
  • 2-Handed Weapons
  • Amulets
  • Boots
  • Chest Armors
  • Gloves
  • Helms
  • Leg Armors
  • Rings
  • Chaos

While caches do not only contain gear of the type indicated, there is a much higher chance of receiving that type. This usually results in at least one of the items dropped being of the desired type. Chaos caches contain more of no specific gear type but contain more items overall.

The items found in Grim Favor Caches scale with your World Tier. Legendary items and Sacred gear are both confirmed to drop from caches (with one guaranteed legendary when the cache is orange). It is expected (but unconfirmed) that Ancestral Items will drop from Grim Favor Caches as well. Players may also receive crafting materials, gold, and Murmuring Obols from a Grim Favor Cache.
