When you first get armor in Diablo 4, you won't be able to choose the most fashionable option — instead, you'll have to equip whatever is the strongest piece that you currently own.
However, early on in the game, you'll be able to transmog the gear you pick up to change its overall look and even its pigments. If you're wondering how you can do this, follow this guide to learn how to unlock the transmog ability.
How To Transmog Gear
To be able to transmog the gear you've acquired in Diablo 4, you'll need to find the wardrobe. The location of the wardrobe is within the first town of Kyovashad, which you will arrive in after exploring the Icehowl Ruins.
You can find the wardrobe at the location shown above. When you arrive at the house, open up the wardrobe to be able to change your armor. There are a multitude of options available to you, such as your headgear, top, bottom, bracers, shoes, and even weapons. When you choose which piece you'd like to change, you'll be able to select a variant based on what you have acquired already. For example, if you want to wear a crown but have a helmet equipped, you'll be able to change the look of the helmet to match a crown you've received.
You'll also be able to change the colors of your items, with a few different colorways available. All you will need to do is go under the Select a Pigment section and choose from the options available to you.
How To Hide Gear
There might be some pieces on your character that you wish to hide completely, like your helmet or bracers. To do this, open up the wardrobe again and go to the armor piece you want to keep hidden.
Underneath the 'Select a Variant' section, you'll find all the variants that you have unlocked, as well as two options at the start that say 'Default Look' and 'Unequipped Look'. Default Look will be whatever piece you currently have on your character in its original form, and Unequipped Look will completely remove the item from your character. So, if you're wanting to show off your character customization without a helmet on, choose Unequipped Look.
How To Get More Transmog Options
Getting new Transmog options for your character is a relatively simple task. All you will need to do is salvage items you have in your equipment bag at the Blacksmith. You can visit Zivek in Kyovashad to do this.
You'll only get new Transmog looks on items that have an axe symbol above them, meaning that they are not currently in your Transmog catalog. Remember not to salvage any items that you plan on equipping to your character later.
You can also visit the shops in new towns and purchase the items they have for sale. This includes Armor Vendors, Weapon Vendors, Jewelry Vendors, and more. Often times the items you find from vendors will be particularly expensive, though, so it's better to explore and find new pieces on your own.
