Every class in Diablo 4 has a game-changing Specialization ability waiting in the wings for players to reach level 15 and complete a class-specific quest. Sorcerers gain access to massive customization capabilities through the use of Enchantment Slots, which allow for passive casting of any currently learned skill (excepting Ultimate Skills). What triggers these skills differs based on the selected spell and often comes with a variety of unique additions to the original spell.

Before taking advantage of these awesome Enchantment Slots, players must reach level 15 and complete every step of the Legacy of the Magi questline. The quest pops up as a Priority Quest automatically, dropping a point of interest all the way back to where players first spawned after starting a new game. The nearest Waypoint is the memorably-creepy town of Nevesk, and players should head directly southwest from there until they find the NPC Mordarin.

Updated by Chad Thesen on July 2,2023: Aspects are a massive part of building your characters in Diablo 4. Having the right ones on the right gear can be the difference between success and failure and can greatly slow down your rate of progression if handled poorly. This guide has been updated to feature embedded links to both a list of all the Codex of Power Aspects you can get your hands on for your Sorcerer and where you can find them. As well as a list of weapons for the sorcerer that includes great Aspects you will want in builds.

Legacy Of The Magi

Speak to Mordarin to kick off the quest, which prompts players to head east toward a nearby dungeon by the name of Lost Archives. Incidentally, this is an Aspect dungeon which is currently home to the Aspect of the Protector. This is a great Aspect for Sorcerers, as it grants a temporary shield to any class currently combating an Elite enemy. It's highly recommended for early-game players. Aspects aside, for now, head on into the dungeon and start exploring.

The Dust-Covered Chest

Diablo 4 - Sorcerer Legacy of the Magi - Dust-Covered Chest

Players need to find a key item called The Forgotten Codex, which is sealed away in a Dust-Covered Chest located to the east of the central room (the one with the Necromancer's Coffin in the center). Two elite enemies will be standing guard, marked by skull icons on the map, but they're nothing a master of magical violence can't handle. Defeat the hordes and their respective Elites, open the chest, and scoop up the key item.

Optionally complete the rest of the dungeon to get the Aspect by opening the coffin in the middle of the map after placing two Mechanical Boxes on the pedestals of the boss. There will be plenty of Aspects to add to your Codex of Power for the Sorcerer in other dungeons too. Some Aspects will already be part of your weapon of choice and fit nicely into your build. Then, head on out of the dungeon and back to Mordarin, who should be standing right where the player left him.

The Abandoned Shack

Diablo 4 - Sorcerer Legacy of the Magi - Fight

After a brief dialogue, head into the Abandoned Shack and help Mordarin prepare his dubious ritual. There are four torches representing the four elements in the center of the room. Fortunately, players don't need to summon spells of each element to proceed. Simply approach each torch to activate them, which will kick off the ritual. As per the Diablo rules, expect demonic interference and things to just generally go wrong. Defeat hordes of demons, speak to Mordarin one last time, and the quest is complete! The Legacy Of The Magi remains a mystery, but Enchantment Slots are here to stay.

How To Use Enchantment Slots

Diablo 4 - Sorcerer Enchantment Slots 02

Finding the Enchantment Slots isn't immediately obvious, as they are tucked away at the bottom of the Skills Menu. Open up that menu and notice two additional slots now available at the bottom; one opened up, and another awaiting level 30. Both slots function the same way and allow players to map any skill (except Ultimate Skills) to these passive Enchantment Slots.

Wait, Passive Skills?

Enchantments are passive versions of every active skill, accompanied by unique expressions both in form and activation. For example, the fan-favorite Fireball Skill attains an interesting passive effect. Killed enemies explode in a chain reaction of Fireballs, doing half damage to every enemy in proximity. Another incinerating example is a Firewall, which gives any enemy an automatic 5% chance of spawning two Firewalls beneath them any time they take burning damage.

Top 5 Sorcerer Enchantments

Without making this list too exhaustive, here are five great options for the Sorcerer seeking the perfect Enchantment. It's well worth exploring the entire repertoire of spells, but these five should get the (fire)ball rolling.

  1. First up is, of course, Fireball-infused exploding corpses. This skill is particularly solid for AoE damage, handling hordes of flammable enemies with relative ease.
  2. Flame Shield is basically an automatic Phoenix down (wait, wrong game). Flame Shield automatically activates upon fatal damage, with a 2-minute cooldown period after each instance.
  3. Similarly, Ice Armor is a great way to boost the flimsy defenses of the average Sorcerer. Any incoming damage will spark a 5% chance of automatic Ice Armor being cast on the player.
  4. Teleport will automatically replace dodge with a sizable 17-second cooldown afterward. This is a great way to Teleport without wasting a valuable Hot Bar slot.
  5. For lightning mages constantly creating Crackling Energy everywhere, Lightning Spear will be automatically cast in 10% of cases whenever the player absorbs crackling energy.

With 21 Skills to try out, Sorcerers may very well inherit the most significant customization potential when it comes to Specialization potential. As a final convenience of the Enchantment system, players can use the same spell actively and passively (Enchantment Slots aren't limited by which spells are currently in the Hot Bar). That's all aspiring Sorcerers need to know about Specialization. Now go play with fire.
