Diablo 4 differs from its predecessor in a number of ways, one of which is its side quests. These quests allow the player to immerse themselves more deeply in the world while gaining bonus gold, experience, and Renown. It also gives a hefty increase to your potential playtime. While the majority of side quests are very straightforward, others have a tricky section or interesting option — such as Votive Passing.

Updated by Abigail Angell on June 19, 2023: Diablo 4 has several side quests with multiple dialogue options. The Votive Passing Side Quest is one of these - players have two options when talking to Maisie at the end of the quest. We observed that readers were interested in whether this choice matters and updated the article to include that information.

The Votive Passing Side Quest is located in Braestaig, a town in the Northern section of Scosglen. To begin this quest, you'll need to have completed the Main Quest, Parting Embers. The initial NPC you speak to for this quest is Chief Asgail, who can be found next to the Waypoint.

How To Complete Votive Passing

There are a number of steps to this quest, several of which require some searching on the part of the player.

  1. First, you'll need to talk to Chief Asgail in Braestaig to begin this quest.
  2. She will send you out to find 3 dead hunters in the wilderness to the north of town. This will be marked on your map.
  3. Once you've found a hunter, place the grave marker and fight the enemies that spawn.
  4. If you'd like, you can examine the bodies to get a description of them and how they might have died (optional).
  5. Repeat steps 3 & 4 for all three bodies.
  6. After interacting with the third hunter, you will hear a voice and a new goal to find it. Head further north to the marked area on your map.
  7. In this area, you're looking for a wounded hunter who will be reciting a prayer. Speak with him to receive a Handmade Torc.
  8. Take the Torc to Maisie back in town, who is standing with her father.
  9. During your conversation, choose a dialogue option to comfort her, which will end the quest.

Each of the hunters will be found back up against a wall, although they can blend into the landscape a little. The best way to find them is the ghostly outline of a Ward of Passing the game puts nearby.

Comforting Maisie - Dialogue Options

When comforting Maisie, the player will receive two options:

  1. Airidah thought it was a necessary price to prepare for what was to come.
  2. Fearing the death of her people, Airidah only brought more in haste.

While this is a great chance to role-play your character, the dialogue option you choose does not affect the story or outcome of the quest. This is true for all Diablo 4 quests with multiple options, as this is a very linear game.

Votive Passing Quest Rewards

Players will receive +20 Renown for completing this quest, in addition to gold and experience, depending on their current level. This is a very efficient way to get Renown and cash, as the quest takes only about 15–20 minutes. In general, side quests are a good way to get Renown — ones with vague directions tend to be even faster than average if you can complete them.
