Diablo 4 players are eagerly mapping out end-game content, including several rare crafting materials needed to upgrade gear. While many of these resources are finicky to farm, such as Fiend Roses, or Crushed Beast Bones, one is rarer than all the rest. As a sign of their worth, they have a noticeable Yellow hue when dropped on the ground.

Scattered Prisms are a mysterious resource whose flavor text does not provide many details on obtaining them - saying they are hoarded by very big creatures. If you, like most players, are confused about how to get this resource, how important it is, and what it is used for, then continue reading to find out.

Updated by Abigail Angell on June 19, 2023: Diablo's rarest resource is primarily farmed through World Bosses. Now that we have gathered information on and written guides about these powerful enemies, this article has been updated to reflect that. We have also added additional methods of farming Legendary Gear available to players in the late game.

What Are Scattered Prisms Used For?

The in game text for Scattered Prisms in Diablo 4

Scattered Prisms are primarily an end-game resource. They can be used for adding sockets to your gear at the Jeweler. Sockets are a big upgrade to your gear, making it a good investment once you get to the later stages of the game. It isn't advised to spend any Scattered Prisms you might find adding sockets to earlier gear because they are so rare.

Where To Get Scattered Prisms

World Boss Ashava Fighting Multiple Players

Scattered Prisms can be obtained as a drop from World Bosses, Treasure Goblins, or (very rarely) from salvaging Legendary gear. None of these options are easy, which is why Scattered Prisms are one of the rarest crafting materials in the game.

The Best Way To Farm Scattered Prisms

Because Treasure Goblin spawns cannot be predicted, and the chance of salvaging Legendary gear is so low, the best way to farm Scattered Prisms is by killing World Bosses. However, killing World Bosses isn't a solo activity. These monsters are meant to be fought by 20–50 players.

Fighting World Bosses

You can see a World Boss spawn in advance because there will be an icon over a designated World Boss Arena on the World Map. There are currently three possible World Bosses:

How To Farm Legendary Gear

A necromancer inside a dungeon in Diablo 4

While Legendary gear isn't the best way to farm Scattered Prisms, farming these high-tier items is a good fallback option in between waiting for World Bosses to spawn. If the items are good, you keep them. If they're meh, salvage them and hope for Prisms.

Legendary gear can drop from Elites, Bosses, gear caches, and from chests. This means that clearing dungeons or completing Bounties for the Tree of Whispers is the best way to farm Legendary Gear.

Dungeons

Some dungeons are better to farm than others - look for those that have few dead ends and high numbers of elites (dungeons with Animus carriers, for instance). Another option, although one that will often result in less efficient dungeon layouts, is to run Nightmare Dungeons.

Well-known farming spots include:

  • Anica's Claim
  • Underroot
  • Mercy's Reach
  • Forbidden City
  • Champion's Demise

The higher the level of the Legendary gear is, the higher the chance it will drop rare materials when salvaged. Obviously, you'll need to weigh this benefit with potentially losing Legendary high-level gear without gaining anything in return.

You can run many dungeons over and over again by resetting them.

Grim Favors

Working for the Tree of Whispers is likely to net you Legendary items in the various caches. Grim Favors frequently respawn, giving you the flexibility to choose the options your build is best suited for, and have more variety than dungeon running. You also have the chance to pick up other rare resources such as Veiled Crystals, Baleful Fragments, and Coiling Wards. The downside is that not all turn-ins will have a legendary - only caches that are the Legendary orange color will result in a Legendary rarity item.
