Diablo 4 features a wide variety of plants, ores, monster parts, and other crafting materials that can be used to upgrade gear and brew Elixirs. You’ll find most of these materials by simply killing mobs, completing quests, and interacting with various objects in the open world. However, that’s not the case with all crafting materials.

Rare materials like Forgotten Souls are quite difficult to acquire. Similar to Aberrant Cinders and a few other materials, Forgotten Souls can only be obtained after beating the game on Veteran difficulty and unlocking Nightmare mode.

What Are Forgotten Souls?

Diablo 4 Forgotten Souls

Lore-wise, a Forgotten Soul is described as being both a stone and an organ, as well as something else. The in-game description is a bit vague in regard to its exact nature, so it’s probably best not to look into it too much. The only thing you’ll need to keep in mind is that Forgotten Souls can be used to upgrade Sacred and Ancestral items.

It’s important to note that you can upgrade any item using common crafting materials, but only up to a certain point. In order to max out your Sacred and Ancestral items you’re going to need a variety of rare materials like Baleful Fragments, Coiling Wards, and, of course, Forgotten Souls.

Where To Find Forgotten Souls

Where to find Forgotten Souls in Diablo 4

Forgotten Souls can only be acquired during Helltides, special events that appear throughout Sanctuary at regular intervals. These events spawn once every 75 minutes and can appear in various locations on the map. Once a Helltide is active, players can travel to its location where they can complete special challenges in exchange for Aberrant Cinders, Tortured Gifts, and more.

Once you’re in the right area, you’ll want to keep an eye out for Screaming Hell Veins. These look similar to regular Ore veins and drop Forgotten Souls in addition to Iron Chunks, Silver Ore, and Gems. As an added bonus, Screaming Hell Veins also drop Aberrant Cinders.

While you’re in the area, there’s a chance you’ll also run into enemies known as Helltide Harbingers. These enemies are very powerful but fighting them is well worth the hassle since they have a chance to drop Forgotten Souls along with the usual assortment of items, gold, and other knick-knacks.

Finally, you can also acquire Forgotten Souls from Tortured Gifts. Tortured Gifts are special chests that only appear during Helltides and can be unlocked using Aberrant Cinders. You can get your hands on loads of Aberrant Cinders by simply killing enemies in the area. Make sure to spend as many Cinders as you can during a Helltide because all your unused ones will disappear once the event ends.
